Are you friends with your colleagues on Facebook?

You are probably a couple of weeks in to your internship and you have now gotten to know your new colleagues a little bit. Some of you might wonder how close you have to be before you add a co-worker on Facebook? Do you even want your colleagues to be your friends on Facebook? Here are a few pieces of advice on how to handle this?

  1. Feel the vibe. What relationship do your colleagues have to each other? Do they hang out after work or do they only see each other during office hours? If no one else is friends on Facebook it will probably be considered a bit weird if the intern starts adding colleagues on Facebook.
  2. If you want to avoid the risk of being considered the creepy intern that is Facebook stalking colleagues you should let your colleagues add you instead.
  3. So, a co-worker added you on Facebook and you really don’t want to let him or her into your Facebook world. At the same time rejecting a friend request might put you in a weird spot when you get back to the office and have to work with that colleague the next day. The solution to this problem is privacy settings. Make restrictions so that your new friend can only see what you want him or her to see.

What makes you apply for an internship?

In one of Universum’s surveys students were asked what they find important when they are applying for internships. When US students got the question “What do you find most important that an employer offers in an internship program?” the top five answers were the following:

  1. Opportunity for full-time employment
  2. Job orientation/training
  3. Challenging assignments
  4. Good Employer reference
  5. Competitive Compensation

The list doesn’t look the same in all countries. In Germany for example, having the opportunity to get a full-time employment doesn’t even make it to the top five list. Instead german students value these five internship characteristics:

  1. Job orientation/training
  2. Challenging work
  3. Assigned mentor
  4. International internship opportunities
  5. Good Employer reference

What is that makes you considering applying for an internship? Do you agree with the lists above? Share your opinion with us!

Is your internship what you expected it to be?

At the Springboardr HQ in Stockholm we have a day off tomorrow because of the Swedish holiday Midsummer. For all of you not living in Sweden, tomorrow is just another day at the office and we are curious to know what you think of your internship.  Most of you have probably worked for a few weeks now and you are starting to know how things work at the office. Is it what you expected? If not, we have a few tips how you can make the upcoming weeks to what you want them to be.

1. Talk to your supervisor. Explain how you feel and come with concreteexamples of what tasks you want or how what you are doing can become more interesting.

2. Own initiatives. Ask your colleagues if they need help with something or come with suggestions on what you can help out with.

3. Think about what you are learning. Even if the internship is not  what you expected it to be you might gain valuable experience anyway. Take a few minutes to think about what skills you are learning and how they can help you in the future. Just because something is not what you expected it to be doesn’t mean it is bad.

Gender Roles in Sweden: Do they exist?

Since Springboardr is headquartered in Sweden, we thought we would take a look at one aspect of student views on the career world. Gender roles are always a subject of interest when discussing careers and success. As it has evolved over the years, it is interesting to get a sense of what people, especially students, think about the topic of gender and if it affects areas of work. Looking at just Sweden in comparison to other countries, we see some interesting statistics.

For example, when asked about the number of internship applications applied to, females outdid males in the 5-10 internship categories while males outperformed females in the more than 20 category. This could allow of interesting evaluations of how females choose and pick which internship programs they would benefit from whereas males are, in general, looking more for internship program experience in general. To follow up with this idea, even though both males and females ranked “gain experience” as their main interest in applying for an internship program, males tended to be less interested in internship programs overall. This is just in Sweden, however, and gender differences based on geography could be another unique area to look at. Though generalizations about what female vs. male sentiment is in the terms of internship wants and needs, it is interesting to at least examine what similarities and differences exist between the gender groups.

What are your views about gender roles in the student community? Let us know!

Why you should fill out your Springboardr profile

Is your profile 100% complete on Springboardr? Does it matter if it is? Yes, it does!

When Employers are reaching out to the Springboardr members they never reach out to everyone. They have specific criterias for who they want to show up for their Meet Up or apply for their Graduate Program. It might be a career profile, students at certain universities with a specific degree or nationality. If an employer is looking for students from your university and you haven’t filled information out on your Springboardr profile, there is no way the Employer will find you. So, spend a few minutes to fill out your profile so that you don’t miss out on any opportunities that employers offer.
